Wake by Lisa McMann (Part 1)

For Writer's Workshop class, we were to choose a book to do our independent reading project on. I was going through some books and this book actually caught my eye. I don't know about you but the title and the picture appeared as a mystery to me. What will happen when you wake? What's going to happen? This is almost as questioning as spotting the book Alphabet of Manliness. (http://www.amazon.com/Alphabet-Manliness-Maddox/dp/080652720X) Although that book made me quite think of more questions...

As I was reading through this story, I liked how it is organized by time. You can easily follow along the main character and see what she is going through. But before I could add on to what I like, I shall tell you the thrilling summary of what I have read so far.

Jannie Hannagan isn't an ordinary seventeen year old girl. She gets sucked into someone else's dream when they're dreaming and can't get out of it most of the time. Her first experience of that was when Jannie was only eight. She was in a man's dream where he was giving a presentation in a conference, but everyone was laughing .... he was in his underwear. The bald  man spotted Janie and mouthed out, "H-E-L-P." Janie's mom happend to wake her up and when they reached their stop, Janie saw the man in the dream.

Okay. If I was Janie at the age of eight, I would probably freak out and tell my mom or somebody about it. I'd also probably slap myself a few times; telling myself to not be crazy or something. BUT, she did make a good point. "They'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak."

Later in the book, Janie gets the readers involved with deep problems she's had throughout her life. Her mom is a heavy alcoholic and did not show any love and care towards Janie, she had no friends, and she was bullied. She's been always bullied and disliked by Melinda Jeffers, the rich girl. Just like any typical, American movies, Melinda Jeffers was like a Marianne to Olive in the movie, "Easy A."

Except in the movie, "Easy A", Marianne disliked Olive for thinking she was committing "adultery" but Melinda disliked Janie for thinking that she was just a complete loser at school.

Anyways, Janie meets her new neighbor who becomes her best friend, Carrie, but here's the twist. One day, Carrie throws a sleepover where both Janie AND Melinda were invited. It turned out to be a lot worse when Janie discovered something about Melinda. Melinda had strong feelings toward Carrie and dreamt of an awful, sexual dream of her and Carrie making out. Janie wakes up and tries not to feel awkward in the next morning.
